War zone

Are you in a war zone?

If you have the Spirit of the Almighty God living in you, you are.

A war zone is an area where combat takes place. When we decide to follow Christ, we enter a war zone, and the battles begin.

Some battles will be won, and some battles will be lost.

No matter the result of each individual battle, we have an Almighty Commander, who promises us the victory of the war.

"When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: 'Death has been swallowed up in victory.'
'Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?'
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
~ 1 Corinthians 15:54-57

Do you believe Him?

In light of this victory, how should we live?

"Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." ~ 1 Corinthians 15:58

How, you may ask, are we to "stand firm"?

Let's go back to the war zone illustration. No one in their right mind would go into a war zone without armor or a weapon.

Why, then, do we so often neglect to put on the armor and take up the weapon which the Commander offers us?

"Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." ~ Ephesians 6:14-18

To clarify who our enemy is, we are not in combat with others (as in the military sense of a war zone). As followers of Christ, we wage war against our own sin nature, which is exploited by the devil.

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." ~ Ephesians 6:12
